Stunning seafowl but no northern finch
Having left home around 6am I was disappointed not to be rewarded with lekking Black Grouse on my way north and wished I had driven straight to North Queensferry instead to see the Northern Bullfinches. As it was, I ended up at Musselburgh Lagoons where I had good but distant views of the (returning?) drake Surf Scoter, found a Great Northern Diver and picked out at least three Slavonian Grebes. Long-tailed Duck, Velvet Scoters, Wigeon and Goldeneye made up the supporting cast but even with these species I struggled to make the most of what morning sunlight there was and felt I could have done better on the photography front. By the time I arrived at NQ, the skies had clouded over and passerine activity had become virtually non-existent.
