Scottish Red-necked reveals itself

A last minute decision to head for Castle Loch, Lochmaben, proved to be the right one in the end. Indeed, within an hour of leaving the house I was enjoying views of not one but two Red-necked Grebes, one of which posed beautifully for the camera at fairly close range. With nobody else around, I lay there in the late afternoon winter sunshine and had wonderful views of a bird so rarely seen - and certainly not as close to home as this.

I returned the next day and got some shots with the sun on the bird and also got some nice shots of some more familiar species.
