East coast Gulls and Terns
Acting as taxi driver for a girls' shopping trip (27th Aug 2022), I thought I'd make the most of the trip to the east coast. East Chevington had plenty of Ruff, but the scarcities had disappeared so I drove down to Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, and walked to Beacon Point. A nice surprise here was a group of 5 Mediterranean Gulls loafing around between the gold course and the beach; my patience was rewarded with point-blank views of adults (4) and a juvenile. At the point itself, Golden Plover were present in their hundreds and there were loads of other common waders too. But the stars of the show were always going to be the Roseate Terns. There weren't many today (maybe 4 adults and a couple of juveniles), but there were also a couple of juvenile Black Terns, another nice surprise. The Mediterranean Gulls proved a doddle to photograph, the terns less so, especially when other birders arrived on the scene.
